(FAQs)

Q: Melissa, tell us a little about BlankSlate Concepts. What inspired you to start this venture?

Melissa: BlankSlate Concepts is a creative partner for individuals and companies looking to bring their vision to life—whether it’s apparel design or interior spaces. After two decades of working in design and traveling the world, I realized there was a gap in personalized, thoughtful design solutions. I wanted to create a service that helped bridge that gap, offering expertise that’s approachable and tailored to specific needs. The name “BlankSlate” came from the idea of starting fresh, with endless possibilities for creativity. That’s the magic I aim to bring to each project.

Q: What kinds of services does BlankSlate Concepts offer?

Melissa: I offer services in two main areas: apparel and interiors.

For apparel, I specialize in helping brands launch or grow their denim business. Denim is a big investment, and with my expertise, I ensure it’s done right and cost-effectively. I connect clients with mills, factories, and vendors while creating detailed development calendars.

On the interiors side, I work with homeowners, contractors, and anyone looking to reimagine their space. Whether you need help choosing colors, fabrics, and trends or want hands-on guidance for a renovation, I provide flexible solutions that fit your needs without the commitment of hiring a full-time interior designer.

Q: That sounds amazing. What does the initial process look like for a client?

Q: How do clients decide which service is best for their project?

Melissa: The process starts with my Intro Service, which is complimentary. This is a 30-minute virtual meet-and-greet where we discuss your project and get to know each other. It’s an opportunity to clarify your needs and decide on the best service package for you.

Melissa: That’s something we’ll go over during the initial call. I’ll ask questions about your goals, the scope of the project, and your timeline to ensure we choose the package that best fits your needs.

Q: For apparel, you mentioned there are two service levels. Can you break those down for us?

Melissa: Absolutely!

Service 1: Consultation Only

This is perfect for low-touch projects.
It starts with a 1-hour Zoom consultation for $250, where we discuss the project’s scope and timeline.
I can visit your company’s space to better understand your needs, for a travel cost and a $350 retainer fee (applied to the total cost).
Ongoing consulting is charged at $150/hour. This includes advice on vendors, raw materials, and cost optimization.
Service 2: Consultation + Hands-On

This includes everything in Service 1, but I become more involved.
The total cost depends on the size and duration of the project. For smaller projects, hourly rates of $175 apply. For larger projects lasting a month or more, we’ll determine a package rate.
All travel costs are billed separately.

Q: And what about interior design? Are the services structured similarly?

Q: What about payment terms? How does that work for each service?

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

Melissa: Yes, the structure is similar.

Service 1: Consultation Only

This is great for smaller projects or for clients who want to remain hands-on.
It includes a $250 Zoom consultation and a $350 retainer for a site visit, with consulting billed at $150/hour.
I also offer a $250 flat fee for a color palette and mood board, providing a clear direction for contractors and shopping.
Service 2: Consultation + Hands-On

This is ideal for larger projects, like renovating a home or remodeling several rooms.
Like the apparel package, hourly rates start at $175 for smaller projects, while larger ones are priced as a full package.

Melissa: For Service 1, it’s an hourly charge, invoiced at the end of each week (on Fridays).
For Service 2, 50% of the total cost is due upon signing the contract, with the remaining 50% due upon project completion.

Melissa: I accept payments via Venmo and Zelle.

Q: How long does it typically take to receive a costing proposal?

Q: Are there any additional costs clients should be aware of?

Melissa: After our initial Zoom consultation, I can have a costing proposal ready for you within 48 hours.

Melissa: For both apparel and interior services, travel costs are billed separately. This includes flights, hotels, and mileage beyond 20 miles. For international projects, I require a month’s notice and an agreed-upon travel budget.

Q: With so much experience, what would you say is your unique approach to design?

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone hesitant about starting a design project?

Q: Any final thoughts for potential clients?

Melissa: Design is such a collaborative and exciting experience. Whether you’re building your brand or reimagining your home, I’m here to help make your vision a reality. Let’s create something beautiful together!

Melissa: My approach is rooted in thoughtful design that’s both beautiful and functional. I draw inspiration from the places I’ve traveled and the people I’ve met. Sustainability is also a big part of my process. Whether it’s a pair of jeans or a living room, I want the end result to inspire you every day.

Melissa: Don’t let the fear of where to start hold you back. That’s exactly why I’m here—to guide you through the process, step by step. Whether it’s finding the right vendors or choosing the perfect shade of paint, I’ll make it manageable and even fun.
